‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from gurney to success with the Basque club
The initial occasion the Athletic striker competed in England, an young appearing for the reserve team against German opponents at Adams Park in fall 2015, he scored. During his subsequent match he played in the country, against Sunderland weeks after, he converted. His third outing, against the Citizens six weeks after that, sure enough, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he scored again. A spectacular strike, as well. “Truly,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Therefore the team did their duty: they took him off.
“I was furious,” the attacker says, then chuckling. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the typical thing. I have no idea the validity, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at the club. It’s a privilege.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At Lezama, the Basque Country, the early training is about to start; after it, the brief trip to the airport and another flight to England, this time to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. It has become a tough year for the club, partly because of the demands of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. However, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.
In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates a domestic final by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway accompanied by a million fans after winning the Copa del Rey, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are unique and debuting in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he admits.
The player believed it hard enough just to make the first team and he was right. The son of the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the coach, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. He signed for Athletic at 17 but after his top-level debut in that summer, he suffered a serious knee problem, the cut, a relegation and a call back before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to experience the peak of their lives.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the top level but each step you progress through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his first game and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I tear my cruciate.
“A severe disappointment but I reflect on it as a turning point because it made me change the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it helps. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, typical youth behavior. At Lezama, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, address that. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. Every small aspect: do them.
“At the top level you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact repeatedly. They’re so strong. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”
Minutes are crucial. He left in tears in 2020, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. At Sabadell in 2020-21, he netted three goals in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, work, believe, and if one day a vacancy arises where you play, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, compete continentally, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks appreciate the experience. Especially after last year which, on occasions, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
