Fernando Alonso Sets Pace Opening Practice at Singapore Grand Prix

Singapore Grand Prix

3-5 October will see the race starting at 13:00 BST on Sunday.

Real-time updates streamed on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and mobile app.

FP1 Results Overview

The team's two-time champion topped the times beating Scuderia star and reigning champion in FP1 for the Singapore Grand Prix.

The British team's drivers Australian rookie and British talent finished the session in fifth and sixth.

Piastri was a notable margin quicker than Norris.

Alonso was a tenth and a half in front of Leclerc and a clear gap clear than Verstappen.

Ferrari's British icon was fourth fastest.

Car Performance

Unlikely that the Silverstone-based team will be contenders for P1.

Nonetheless, the squad are optimistic of a strong showing on a technical venue that is ideally suited to their vehicle, which performs better when significant amounts of aerodynamic grip are called for.

Veteran racer Alonso is also renowned as a street circuit master, and usually excels on the Singapore circuit.

But he was likely operating with a lighter load or a more aggressive setting than his competitors, or each, to set such a quick time.

Session Details

Partner Canadian racer was a significant margin off the pace in 18th place.

Stroll had difficulties with his driving position early in the session and was also testing experimental parts.

FP1 in Marina Bay is not representative of race pace under lights as it is conducted in afternoon sun in late afternoon, while qualifying and the main event are held at night.

Championship Standings

Piastri is ahead of his teammate by a solid margin with remaining rounds left entering the weekend in Singapore.

McLaren are in position to clinch the team title on the weekend.

Single possibility they can fail to secure it in this race is if Mercedes surpass them by thirty-one or Ferrari manage it by a similar margin.

Competitor Outlook

Red Bull are optimistic of a good performance after recent successes in the previous rounds leading into this Grand Prix.

They were relieved when drizzle falling ahead of FP1 abated by the moment the machines went out on a track that had not been wet.

Team consultant the Austrian said prior to running that they required a clear session to get underway on understanding their car configuration for the Grand Prix.
