Mystery Rosy Ooze on Remote Tasmanian Coast Raises Anxiety of Potential Phytoplankton Proliferation
Authorities in the island state are working to identify a pink slime that has surfaced on a secluded beach, with some scientists anxious it could be an algal bloom.
Extensive Occurrence Along Shore
The pink-tinged sludge was found on a stretch of a coastal area about 37 miles south of Hobart. A like substance has also been noted on parts of a nearby shore and an additional coastal site.
Examples Taken for Examination
Examples have been taken and sent to the Environment Protection Authority for testing. A representative remarked that "algae outbreaks are a natural event in reaction to changes in nutrients, temperature, rain or light".
"The events are at times called reddish tides because the proliferations can turn the water red," the representative added. "Not all algae outbreaks are toxic, with several kinds serving as a primary source of nourishment for marine life in the marine food web."
"The primary reason of red tides in these seas is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can create bioluminescent light displays at night."
Growing Frequency Connected to Climate Change
Algae outbreaks are natural events but their rate has grown in the past few years, in part due to climate change and environmental waste that join together to create nutrient-rich waters geared for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that normally function as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a proliferation, there is a quick expansion in their numbers that disturbs the healthy balance of ecosystems.
These occurrences have been likened to subsurface wildfires and can continue to grow as long as conditions are ripe. In severe cases, vulnerable aquatic environments can be destroyed as aquatic animals is eliminated or deprived of oxygen, supplying more minerals for the bloom.
Previous Catastrophic Outbreak in another region
Another region in the past confronted a catastrophic algae outbreak along its southern coastline after a series of marine heatwaves, which extended across a vast area. The event resulted in beachgoers with eye irritation and persistent coughs and may have killed up to a quarter-million sea creatures across 400 different species, according to official estimates.
Scientist Analysis on the Tasmanian Case
Faith Coleman, who was involved in studying the beginning of the previous outbreak commented, based on photos of the Tasmanian outbreak, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "ocean glitter".
"We have seen lots of these events around Tasmania of late," she said.
The scientist stated the algae did not produce harmful substances comparable to the organism involved in South Australia's devastating algal bloom, but it does eat microscopic animals and "many fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were most at risk.
"You usually see a outbreak of this algae after a bloom of something else, or an event such as a marine breeding," she noted.
Appeals for Investigation and Community Health
A marine scientist, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, commented it looked like the potential proliferation had "grown significantly" and proposed the aquaculture sector was the probable cause, citing like situations in other places.
"Therefore we needs to deliver a firm alert here, the government and the environmental agency need to respond to this. We need to study the examples we've collected and we need to notify the community here," she said.
She said she had concerns for public safety after experiencing a prickling feeling along her arms and face while being exposed with tainted seawater.
Accounts of Lifeless Sea Creatures and Calls for Government Response
An advocacy organization has stated deceased sea creatures and dead sea cucumbers washing ashore, with a prominent conservationist labeling the event as an "environmental emergency" and calling on the local leader to visit and "lead the reaction that government must be making".
"The leader needs to realize this is a disaster in the happening, commercially as well as environmentally."
Official Statement
Speaking to reporters, the premier stated he was uninformed of any relationships between the algal bloom and the farming business, saying expert examination was needed before conclusions could be made.
"We need to ensure our rivers and seas are safe for nature and sustainable," he said.
"The 1,200 beaches across the island are our assets and we need to make sure the community and our business sector can live together to use our seas productively and in a lasting way."
