The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
